She Gets Her Voice Back- 52 Year Old Woman Gets Larynx Transplant

in technology, medicine

A wonderful news. The University of California Davis surgeons successfully transplanted a larynx into a 52- year old woman who had not been able to speak or breathe on her own for more than 10 years.

So far she has been talking using her robotic voice synthesiser.  In an 18-hour long surgery doctors removed Jensen's voice box, her thyroid gland and her trachea and replaced with a donated organ from an accident victim.  They had to reconnect the intricate nerves and muscles and much of the surgery was done looking through a high-powered microscope.

"My 12-year-old granddaughter, Samara, she never heard my voice before cause it was 12 years ago since I spoke," Jensen said at a news conference Thursday. "She only knew me as talking with my mechanical robot voice, and she called my machine the talkie-talkie machine."
